The Tin God.

I came across this sculpture outside Saatchi’s gallery in London and was amazed by the strength of it. I thought for a long time on how to paint it and eventually ended up with this composition. The Tin God holding the world in it’s hand.

Tribal art.

This is an acrylic painting I have just completed of an African sculpture. This particular piece dates back to the late 18th or early 19th century. These pieces were never produced as art, but all had practical uses. To aid in fertility, to bring health or prosperity, to avenge a percieved insult or injury or to carry the soul into the afterlife. Given that they were produced with nothing but the most primitive of tools, the workmanship can be amazing. The scuptures were produced in wood, metal or terracotta, this particular one was carved from wood and I regret now, painting it as though it was cast from metal. The influence on modern painters particularly Picasso can easily be see.
